Baking, canning, cooking, eating and teaching

Someone asked me why I bake and "can", they told me it's too much work.  She told me that she just buy's her pies already made...   I started thinking of all that I do.
My family helps prepare a garden and plant the seeds. My son and his wife and the older kids weed the garden.  When the seeds start to poke there little green heads out of the dark rich soil, the grand kids get excited (so do I). Soon we see the blossoms on the stems.  Anticipation grows.  Next we see the beginning of the fruit or vegetables. "Look grandma, what is this?  Can I eat this broccoli?"  Soon I show them the carrots, they learn how to thin them out and why we do that.  We leave some "un" thinned and they learn latter what a carrot looks like that has been crowded.  Tomatoes are picked, sliced and eaten in so many different ways.  One of the favorite ways the kids like them is on french bread, with garlic butter topped with Parmesan cheese and cooked under the broiler.... yummmyyyy!
Kris and I make jam and jelly, apple sauce, peaches and stewed tomatoes, salsa, tomato sauce, spaghetti.  We pick and prepare herbs and chives, carrots, peppers and pie dough for the freezer.
It's hard to explain the joy I get from knowing that I helped teach the next generation a craft that is starting to fade.  It is so much fun to hear the kids say how good the things from the garden taste.  I know that they are eating healthy, and learning a lot from ....
The Simple Life of Papa Bob and Grandma Mary.  That's why I do the things I do.

I sure hope this quote never comes true.....
You can say this for ready-mixes - the next generation isn't going to have any trouble making pies exactly like mother used to make.  ~Earl Wilson

Sunny Monday

I awoke to a beautiful sunny, crisp, cool day.  Just right for snuggling for a little while and playing with the puppies.  Made me think of all those funny expressions I grew up with.  You know, the "Rise and Shine" type expressions.  So I got to thinking what does that really mean?  For those inquiring minds here is the answer: Get out of bed and prepare for work.

That made sense to me,  but then there was the "origin"  of the expression.  Believe it or not it came from the bible. Isaiah 60:1 Arise, shine; for the light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. That is the King James version... Ok  Time to get some things done around the house...

Smile

I don't know about all of you out there, but reading the paper and listening to the news can sure get one down. I read what is called the comic strips... as a kid we called them the funnies.  I seldom hear anyone chuckle when reading them any more.  Oh there are a few that are the "old" tried and true that make me smile, but not like I remember laughing when I was little.
Hope this makes you smile.  Be sure to vote on my new survey to the right.

Day to Day

The weather is cooling down, so I am much happier.  The heat and I were once good friends, but now I prefer the cooler weather.  It makes it much nicer to work in the garden, and play with the grand kids.  It's time to start making soups and baking breads, making family dinners and relaxing by the fire, playing board games with friends and just enjoying the "Simple Life of Bob and Mary".

Remember, today's actions are the memories for the future. Choose your actions wisely so those around you will have good memories of today.

This may take me time to get going, but I will do it.  I like sharing with others what I do and I like to hear about your life too.
